What's New in Windows Mobile 5.0?
Pages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Internet Explorer

The Internet Explorer in Windows Mobile 5.0 is much improved. It now comes with improved scripting support (such as Javascript), as well as a progress bar to display the progress of the download (see Figure 15).

IE now supports three view options: Default, One Column, and Desktop. You can also switch to full screen for more viewing estate, which hides the title bar and the soft buttons. Figure 16 shows the various viewing options.

To view web pages, it is useful to switch to landscape mode so that you can better view them on your monitor. Figure 17 shows the difference between the default and desktop views.

IE also supports image saving (see Figure 18).

Other Enhancements

Besides the many enhancements covered in this article, there are many other new features in Windows Mobile 5.0. They are:

  • WiFi support for Smartphone
  • Persistent memory for Pocket PC, which means your data will be intact even if the battery goes flat
  • A new version of Windows Media Player 10, allowing users to synchronize music, play lists and favorites, images, video, and even TV recordings
  • Support for push-to-talk and video calling
  • Improved Bluetooth for using ActiveSync over Bluetooth with multiple computers
  • Support for USB 2.0 and internal hard disk
  • Option for device manufacturers to integrate Microsoft's Voice Command utility into their devices (Pocket PCs and Smartphones), allowing users to dial a number by speaking a person's name in the Contacts application
  • New GPS manager, which will simplify the task of connecting to a GPS receiver

Over the next few months, you should be able to see more devices in the market running the new Windows Mobile 5.0 platform. I will be covering more on the new platform in the near future, as soon as I get my hands on the new devices! But for now, check out your device manufacturers' website and see if they offer an upgrade for your device.
